Thank You, Father God, for Kyle and Your gifts in him." -Frank Smith, Crushed Grapes Ministry Several years ago, Kyle and Gail Knapp felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to open their home for a small group of seekers longing for honest fellowship, a deeper relationship with Jesus, and refuge from the abuses of dysfunctional religious systems. As our fellowship grew, we began to encounter others on similar faith-journeys, and learned that Christians in vast numbers were opting out of "institutional church" in favor of more intimate gatherings like ours. Such groups, we discovered, are often referred to as "house church", "home church", or "simple church". Eventually the Knapps terminated their affiliation with the denomination in which Kyle had been ordained as a minister, though they maintain friendships with many of its ministers, and continue to minister in traditional churches as opportunities arise. "While we recognize the dysfunctionality of modern church structures, and believe many common church practices to be un-Biblical, we understand we don't have it all together either," says Kyle. "But we're confident that God will always use people whose hearts are yielded to him, regardless of the environment in which they find themselves." For their part, Kyle & Gail shun titles and hierarchical human authority structures, preferring instead to practice mutual accountability and submission through relationships with other house churches, a variety of ministries, and trusted friends.
